The automated plating system is designed for a compact installation allowing a high throughput of small parts. The plating system consists of a base manufactured of tubular steel which is the support for sixteen process tanks. The center of the base frame houses an elevator lift mechanism which has attached 18 or 36 work arms. The work arms hold the plating racks which in turn hold the parts to be electroplated. The arms have copper contacts to allow low voltage DC current to feed the plating racks at a maximum load of 500 amperes. The elevator will lift all 18/36 work arms at the same time, rotate 20 degrees to the next processing tank and then lower the work arms into the process solution. This movement continues after a highly variable dwell timer has reached zero. The lift, rotate and lower sequence continues through out the production shift.

The process chemistry is held in the Circulating tanks and is divided into three categories of Alkaline, Cyanide and Acid. Each of these categories is separated by their unique containment areas for safety. The different chemical solutions are heated by electric tube type heaters. The circulating pumps move the heated solutions to the appropriate process tank through flexible tubing. The process tanks are continually overflowed and the solution returns to the circulating tanks via an overflow weir in each tank and drain tube in each tank.

The parts to be electroplated are manually loaded onto the plating racks. The plating racks are manually loaded onto the work arms. The system can be equipped with automatic loaders and unloaders.

One plating system will consist of one automated plating machine holding the process tanks, one set of circulating tanks, one set of circulating pumps and one set of electric heaters. Each plating system will have a set of Transfer tanks, one for each category of waste water (Alkaline, Cyanide and Acid). The contaminated waste water will accumulate in the transfer tank and will pump the water to the water treatment systems, provided by others.


The controls will consist of one main control panel and one small operator panel mounted on a pedestal near the operator station. The main control panel will house the PLC, motor and heater controls systems and will be located near the circulating tank area. The operator panels will be located near the Star Plater machine.

The main control panel will have an EZ Touch panel which will allow the operator to:

  • Set each heater set points for the Off/On control of each electric heater
  • Provide graphical data on the temperature of all heated circulating tanks
  • Control the Manual operation of each circulating and transfer pump
  • Set the Start Up time, (real clock mode) for the electric heaters to turn on
  • Provide graphical data for Alarm conditions
  • Provide graphical data for Normal conditions
  • Provide operator Alarm Check information

The Operator panels located at each plating machine will provide:

  • Emergency shut off of the plating machine
  • Allow operator adjustments of the dwell time
  • Provide graphical data for alarms and checks
  • Provide graphical data for Normal conditions
  • Provide Total count on number of cycles for each shift period

PLC Systems

One PLC will be required for each plating system. The control of the electric heaters will be through the input from thermocouples that are submerged in each chemical solution at the circulating tanks.

The circulating pumps will be controlled automatically through the PLC program and the liquid level switches at each circulating tank and will provide feed back for the proper solution level.

Conductivity probes, located in the appropriate Process Rinse tank, will provide input to the PLC for operating the solenoid valves for fresh water. This will greatly reduce the amount of water required for the plating systems.

The liquid level switches, located in the transfer tanks, will provide input to the PLC for the On / Off operation of the transfer pumps. Additionally, they will provide Alarm notification of high and low water level.
